What some parents have to say about Green Monkey

“We just want to say a big thank you to you both!  Your vegetable sachets have made such a difference in our house!!  We first discovered your products at the Culverden Fete and since then have devoured hundreds of them.  Mister nearly 4 will get them on everything and Miss 18 mths loves them and now has them on everything.  So thanks:) Meal times were always a battle, but not any more”.

Kind regards
Deanne and Dean Holland

“Hi, we usually make our own organic food for baby, but tonight we used your green monkey with Pumpkin, Sweet Potato and Silverbeet.  We wanted to let you know that our little girl LOVED it!  She is a food eater anyway, but tonight she ate the whole amount where normally we have been giving her about half that amount. She was very keen on the food and kept opening her mouth for more!
So well done, and thank you”.

Nutritional advice from Nikki

“Fluid Needs for Littlies – how to keep them hydrated in the summer”

There are many different types of fluids available for children to drink.

Children require approximately 4-6 glasses of fluid per day (1.0 – 1.5 litres). Physically active children need to be reminded to drink as thirst is not a good indicator – the easiest way to tell if your child is hydrated is to check the colour of their urine. It should be pale in colour and plentiful.

If your littlie does not drink enough fluid or loses as little as 3% of their body water then this can lead to exhaustion and dehydration. Early signs of dehydration include:

•  Weakness

•  Flushed skin

•  Headache

•  Nausea

Good old-fashioned water is always the best option but be aware that some bottled waters lack the fluoride necessary to protective growing teeth.

Milk is a great beverage because not only does it provide carbohydrate like fruit juice and cordials but it also provides energy, protein and calcium. Making fruit smoothies with frozen yoghurt and ice cubes can really provide a good source of nourishment as well as fluid.

Fruit juice can provide energy, carbohydrate and vitamin C however eating whole fruit does the same thing! Fruit juice should be diluted and limited to once a day as a beverage.

Adding lots of chilled fruit to the diet of a child in warm summer months can help increase their fluid intake. Most children love watermelon and this makes a great snack! In the winter caregivers need to ensure that their littlies fluid intake is also kept up – thin soup can be a sneaky way to get fluid in without filling up small tummies.

Soft drinks and cordials should be kept for special occasions and should not be included as a daily fluid. Sweetened drinks such as cordials, fruit juices and soft drink are often over-consumed by a littlie because they taste nice – this means that a small stomach can feel full and this does not allow for nutritious food to be consumed at meal and snack times.

Golden Rule:             Food First, Drink Second!

Tea, coffee, cola and smart drinks are NOT suitable for children. The caffeine contained in these drinks inhibits iron absorption and may lead to anemia.

Make sure drinking fluids is made fun:
•  Children need their own drink bottles,
•  Make diluted fruit juice ice-cubes to jazz up water in a glass,
•  Make diluted juice ice-blocks to suck on a hot summer’s day,
•  Serve fruit platters as dessert,
•  Have water breaks between games in the park or at sports,
•  Try to set a good example by regularly drinking water yourself.
